The museum in Toledo hosted a performance of El retablo de las maravillas by Miguel de Cervantes, as a prelude to the thirty-sixth edition of the annual festival in La Puebla de Montalbán.
The Ayuntamiento de La Puebla de Montalbán continues to promote the XXXVI edition of Festival Celestina. La España de Rojas, which will take place from August 16 to 25 across various locations in the town.
Last night saw the performance of El retablo de las maravillas, the popular short play by Miguel de Cervantes, staged by AC Festival Celestina at the Museo el Greco in Toledo. It was a resounding success, both in attendance and artistic quality, and served as a preview of what awaits those attending the thirty-sixth edition of the festival in La Puebla de Montalbán.
Soledad de Frutos, Mayor of La Puebla de Montalbán, Vice President and Spokesperson of the Government of the Diputación de Toledo, was accompanied by Tomás Arribas, Provincial Deputy for Culture and Education; Manuel Galán, Deputy of the Organismo Autónomo; Pilar Alía, National Deputy for Toledo; Ana Pérez, Councillor for Culture of the Ayuntamiento de Toledo; and Marisol Illescas, Councillor for Social Affairs.
The mayor expressed her gratitude and excitement for this new edition of the festival, which continues to grow and expand upon its original format. She acknowledged the great work being carried out by all those involved in making this edition possible, especially the wonderful cast, the artistic director of Recua Teatro, María Elena Diardes, and the general coordinator of the company, Luís María García. She also highlighted the institutional support received from the Diputación Provincial and from the festival’s sponsors and collaborators.
De Frutos stated: “This is a fantastic preview of what La Puebla will offer during the Festival: more than 90 artistic performances and a town fully committed, with residents directly and indirectly involved as actors or volunteers working for the Festival. La Puebla gives its all during these days and we hope not to disappoint anyone. Celestina is an unmissable cultural event at the provincial and regional levels, and we are working for it to become so nationally as well.”
The XXXVI edition of Festival Celestina. La España de Rojas will begin on August 16 and run through August 25. Visitors to La Puebla will enjoy theatre, art, culture, heritage, and gastronomy through a wide-ranging programme of events, with one of the highlights being teatro bajo tierra—theatrical performances held in various caves throughout the town—and the staging of Celestina, voces de la memoria, to be performed on August 24.
